Synopsis
Remnants are objects that are imbued with strange properties and found throughout the Zone. They are the only known Anomaly to worm their way into people's heads opposed to being physical manifestations.[1]
The original Remnants were created in Dr, James Cay's lab by infusing objects with a calibrated LIM wave so they could be used to reliably trigger The Well in the Deep Zone.[2]
On September 14th 1961 a lab created Remnant, a tungsten cube, triggered a gamma-ray surge from The Well.[3] Objects with the right characteristics within a 10-mile radius of The Well absorbed the energy from the surge and became the Remnants found out in the Zone.[2]
The Remnants found in the Zone were shabby, cast-off and out of place objects that began appearing in the Zone in 1964.[4] Theses Remnants would bind themselves to people which would lead to an obsession with the object. The obsessions would start out as a sudden interest in the object and grow worse until the Remnant's victims could only think of the Remnant. The victims obsessions would always result in them spiraling into madness and disappearing in a mad chase[5] towards The Well.[6] It is presumed that the previous Remnant holders died either due to their madness or due to the Zone itself killing them.[5]
Known Remnants
The Car
The Car is a Remnant found by the Driver in 1998 and serves as the Driver's form of transport throughout the Zone. The Driver is the only known Remnant holder to have survived their encounter with a Remnant.
The Tungsten Cube
The tungsten cube was a lab created Remnant that was sucked into The Well during Dr. Cay and Dr. Allen Turner's Remnant testing on September 14th 1961. This was the cause of the gamma-ray surge from The Well.[3]
The Record Player
The record player was a Remnant that is offhandedly mentioned by Tobias as his favorite Remnant in the transmission The Remants, Part 1. It is said to have played records normally but every now and then listeners would hear strange voices, presumably from people in the listener's past, as Tobias mentions hearing his 5th grade lunch lady's voice.[4]
The Rusty Paint Can
The rusty paint can was a Remnant found in the woods by Laura Cesari in 1962*. The can of paint is said to have been able to produce every color of paint in existence.[4] It was used by Laura to paint a series of three murals over the course of a year; The Great Pileup Mural, Bigfoot Mural and The Inverting Doorway Mural, of which the visions depicted in them started to come true. Once the paint ran out, Laura Cesari disappeared as all Remnant holders do.[7]
*Date provided from The Great Pileup Mural, Bigfoot Mural, The Inverting Doorway Mural and context from The Painter transmission. Predates Francis' statement that Remnants began to be found in 1964 however that may have been when majority of Remnants started appearing.
The Microwave
The microwave was a Remnant offhandedly mentioned by Francis in the transmission The Remants, Part 1. It is said to have froze food instead of warming it.[4]
The Copper Kettle
The copper kettle was a Remnant offhandedly mentioned by Tobias in the transmission The Remnants. Not much is known about this Remnant as Tobias is cut off by Oppy when he starts to talk about the tea that came out of the kettle.
The Telephone Switchboard
The telephone switchboard was a Remnant offhandedly mentioned by Tobias in the transmission Francis' Shame. It is said to have been able to recall the past somehow[8] however it is not elaborated on how the telephone switchboard did this.
