Singley & Family #1

"I did it! Singley & Family Hauling is back in business!

Incredible. Just as our bills were due. Nobody was hiring us anymore. All these big companies, hiring college students to haul trash on the cheap. But they had no finesse! No care! They were about to shut me out of my father's business of five generations without a second thought.

But not anymore. My wife will be so pleased.

We have to be in Washington by Monday. Then the government will tell us where to go. They say they will pay us, and provide a house and food! For my entire family, my brothers, sisters, uncles, and their families too! Enough work for all of us! We are truly blessed.

"Day 6

I am keeping a journal. I will write in it in English. This is my assignment for night school.

Sometimes it is hard to find words in a new language. But today it is hard to find words in any language. I feel hope, joy, pride. I see our children in this new home, so big we do not have to share rooms anymore.

We are now in a place they call the Olympic Exclusion Zone. The air is heavy and cold. the rain makes us shiver. But electricity is free. we are warm. The food is provided and plenty. Tomorrow we begin our first hauling job. We will work hard for this new life. But we know how to work hard.

"Day 115

The work here? Not so bad.

We're cleaning people's houses. But the people are gone. It's clothes everywhere, food left on kitchen tables. Like they all up and left in the middle of the day. But it's easy work. Clear out food and perishables. Empty the trash. Bring inside things from the yard.

After we finish, another company boards up the windows. Is that why they could give us all our own houses? Why did all these people leave? And why are they leaving so many useful items inside?

Our bosses don't much care what we take for ourselves. So I've been taking paint for my kids. Red paint, black paint, weird silvery-blue paint. I've got quite the collection!

"Day 212

They are very happy with our work. They gave us a raise. Good fortune smiles upon our family.

I think it is because we do not ask questions. There are other companies, like us, but do other things. Cleaners, hunters, transportation. They are very nice, but they like to talk. They try to figure out what we are cleaning and why. They put things that look valuable into their pockets.

I do not take valuable things. Only interesting things. I do not know the English name for them, these toys you put on your car that move. Our daughters like to play with them.

"Day 299

They've got us cleaning up a science facility. Took all damn month. It was a big one, hidden deep in some swamp.

There's a word they use here - "Anomalies" to mean lots of different things. This facility had them stuffed in jars and cages, and it was our job to move them. No problem right? 'cept those Anomalies did NOT like being in those containers. Couple of my brothers got hurt. I lost my right eye, which my wife wasn't too happy about. But it's not like I need both eyes to work. Anyway, ARDA gave me a bonus, so it all adds up in the end. Especially after I got fined for the washing machine collection I've been starting in my front lawn. Are you kidding me? The Zone is what it is, and people still want to run HOAs? Give me a break.

"Day 365

When I was a kid, my dad took me to the circus. I always knew I'd inherit the hauling business from him, but secretly? I wanted to run my own circus. And this Zone may've been the answer to my prayers.

See, the animals are all gone. But every few months, I'll find some taxidermy stuff in a house, and I'd keep it. Now I've got a whole collection, and I'll tell you, when you mix and match them, like the head of a bear on the body of a goose, it's something to see. I've restored an old popcirn machine and as soon as I find another accordion, I tell you, we're in business.

"Day 559

Today we cleaned up the strangest thing.

Our boss gave us a special style of bucket- something about it being LIM Enhanced. We went to a gas station bathroom that had sprung a leak, and put the buckets to catch the leak like they told us to. But the buckets did not catch water, they caught what looked like melted silver!

George put a finger into it, and now he can't wash off the silver. We fixed the leak, and returned the buckets full of silver to the boss. He did not ask us about it, and we did not tell him. My wife knit George a glove to hide his finger. We won't speak a word of it to anyone. Especially not about the bucket of silver we kept for ourselves.

"Day 713

I told my dad last week that I decided to go to college and study science.

He said that it might be too expensive. That it might be too hard, or that I won't be happy. But I've been watching the female scientists here and I want to do what they do.

I can tell it's worrying him. But he said he'd support my dreams. Then, yesterday, he came home and said he renewed our family's work contract for another five years. I think he did it for me, to pay for school.
